HOME DESIGN TIPS: HOW TO ARRANGE ACCESSORIES IN YOUR HOME

Every home has at least two surfaces waiting to be styled. These areas can be empty shelves, blank mantels, or entryway consoles stuffed with clutter. We believe these home design tips can help you organize your favorite accessories.

TIP 1: USE A TRAY

A tray can be used on a console table or coffee table to add dimension to flat surfaces. It also allows you to store items that might otherwise appear disorganized. You should group items with different heights and textures. A small plant or another organic element can add life and color to your tray.

TIP 2: DECORATIVE BOXES

Another great way to add style and conceal keys and remote controls is to use decorative boxes, such as vintage jewelry boxes, canvas, or fabric-covered boxes. This tip will help you declutter your space and make it less likely to lose these items again.

TIP 3: VISUAL TRANANGLES

Visual Triangles are a useful trick that all designers love to use. This allows you to visualize a pleasing arrangement that is proportionate. This technique is particularly useful when styling shelves or mantels. These are the key elements to remember when creating a Visual Triangle.

*Stagger objects according to their height to make a symmetrical or asymmetrical triangle. For example, a mirror or large frame can be used in the middle of a mantel to anchor your grouping. Next, layer your decorative accessories. Remember to arrange them according to size to form your visual triangle.

Avoid putting similar-sized objects together. This is a design no-no. It will make your grouping look boxy and lack visual interest.

Avoid long, zig-zagging or jagged arrangements (also called Mountain-Ranging). Instead, place the tallest object in the center of your group, and then you can stagger the items by height, trying to make a Visual Triangle. Your triangle will be visually interesting if you place larger objects in the front and smaller ones at the back.

TIP 4: VARYING HIGHLIGHTS

As mentioned above, it is important not to place objects of identical height next to each other. To make things more visually appealing, group objects of different heights together. Books are a great way to elevate objects.

This applies to your walls, which many people forget to accessorize. Make a statement by hanging artwork, frames or mirrors in striking patterns at different heights and shapes on the wall.

TIP 5: GROUPS of 3 OR THE RULING OF 3

This guideline is more of a suggestion than a rule. It simply means that odd-numbered items are visually more appealing and more effective than groups of even-numbered objects. Although the number three is considered the “magic number”, other odd-numbered groups of five or seven items can also work well. When creating odd-numbered groupings, another important tip is to mix vertical and horizontal objects and texturally distinct items. Your goal is to add visual interest to your decorative arrangement.

TIP 6: BOOKS

You can arrange books on a bookshelf or use a stack to add visual interest to another surface of your home. Just remember to do it horizontally and vertically. A stack of three books with a small decorative object on top is better than placing them all in one long vertical line.

Accessories are finishing touches that you add to your space. They should be used in conjunction with your furniture to make it personal. These guidelines will assist you in arranging your accessories in the best way possible. We hope you find these home design tips and tricks useful.
